To ensure the safety of waterways during the Eid-ul-Adha celebrations, Bangladesh will suspend bulkhead operations on all routes from June 13 to June 23. State Minister for Shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury confirmed this decision.
On Thursday, May 23, a meeting was held at the Ministry of Shipping to discuss strategies for the smooth operation of ferries, steamers, and launches, and to ensure passenger safety during Eid. The meeting was chaired by Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury.
The State Minister announced that, as in previous years, the number of ferries at Kazirhat and Paturia Ghats will be increased. Additionally, some routes will see an increased number of launches. For seven days surrounding Eid—three days before and three days after—general trucks and covered vans, except those carrying livestock and perishable goods, will be prohibited from ferry transport.
Reflecting on past Eid experiences, Chowdhury remarked, “Last time (Eid-ul-Fitr), the journey was safe. Passengers were able to return home safely and celebrate Eid joyfully with their families. We have taken measures to ensure this Eid is also safe and joyous. Everyone is working together to ensure the safe transport of passengers and sacrificial animals via waterways. The government is committed to providing passenger services.”
Chowdhury also addressed security concerns, stating, “There are some anti-national and unlawful individuals targeting our waterways to create disorder and tarnish the image of the government and our agencies. We have recommended increased intelligence surveillance. The weather office has indicated that this Eid season might have risky weather conditions. Those responsible for transporting passengers and goods must adhere to weather advisories accurately.”
Senior Secretary of the Ministry of Shipping Md. Mostafa Kamal was also present at the meeting.
