The High Court has upheld the trial court‍‍`s verdict in the murder case of Abrar Fahad, a student of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET).

The decision was made on Sunday by the bench of Justice AKM Asaduzzaman and Justice Syed Enayet Hossain.

As per the ruling, the 20 individuals sentenced to death and the 5 others given life imprisonment in the 2021 trial court decision will not see their sentences altered.

The convicted individuals were all expelled leaders and members of the BUET branch of the Bangladesh Chhatra League.

The case, which revolves around the tragic death of Abrar Fahad, has been followed closely since his body was discovered in 2019 at BUET‍‍`s Sher-e-Bangla Hall.

Abrar’s father had filed a murder case with the Chawkbazar police station, leading to the subsequent trial.

In 2021, the trial court sentenced the 20 accused to death and five to life imprisonment.

However, one of the death row convicts, Muntasir Al Zemi, made headlines when he escaped from the high-security central prison in Gazipur on August 6, 2023.

According to a press release from the prison authorities, Zemi broke through a prison wall to make his escape.

The High Court‍‍`s ruling reaffirms the severity of the crime and the ongoing legal proceedings.

It is clear that the case, which has sparked national outrage, continues to unfold with significant consequences for those involved.
