Local administration has seized 9,800 litres of illegal edible oil stock from three upazilas in Sherpur.
Sherpur district consumer rights protection department and the district administration conducted separate mobile court drives in the area and penalized four businesses of taka 1.5 lakh fine.
On information, the District Department of the Consumer Rights Protection conducted a drive at a shop named Sathi Store at Gazir Khamar bazar in Sadar Upazila. During the drive, the law enforcers found 5 thousand litres of soybean oil from the owner Abu Sayem Sathi’s home and warehouses. The price tags of the bottles were set three months earlier. But the original seal was removed and a new price tag of tk 200-220 was set.
Abu Sayem Sathi was later fined Tk 30,000 under two sections of the Consumer Rights Protection Act for selling more than the stipulated price and illegally stockpiling. They seized 5,000 liters of soybean oil were sold to the public at the bottle price.
Rubel Ahmed, assistant director of the Sherpur District National Consumer Rights Protection Department, said such campaigns would continue for the sake of public interest.
On the other hand, 3,400 liters of soybean oil were seized from Satata Store and Nazmul & Brothers in Tinani Bazar of Jhenaigati Upazila and 1,000 liters of soybean oil from Haji Traders of Sreevardi Upazila. A fine of Taka one lakh and twenty thousand was collected from the owners of these three institutions.
