A commotion erupted in the High Court courtroom during the bail hearing of former Chief Justice A.B.M. Khairul Haque in the murder case of Abdul Kaiyum Ahad, a Jubo Dal activist, linked to the anti-discrimination student movement in Dhaka’s Jatrabari area.
The incident occurred on Monday afternoon (August 11) before a High Court bench comprising Justice Sheikh Zakir Hossain and Justice K.M. Rasheduzzaman Raja.
The courtroom saw scuffles and shoving between lawyers representing the Awami League supporters and the state prosecution.
The court has scheduled the next hearing of the bail and case dismissal petition for Sunday, August 17.
Background: On July 24, Khairul Haque was arrested from his Dhanmondi residence by Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Police and later sent to jail.
On July 29, a case was filed against him in Fatulla police station, Narayanganj, accusing him of issuing illegal and fabricated verdicts after the caretaker government system was abolished.
On August 6, a Dhaka court ordered seven days’ remand of Khairul Haque in another case filed at Shahbagh police station, accusing him of corruption and maliciously issuing illegal and fake judgments.
The murder case arose from an incident on July 18 during the July protests, when Abdul Kaiyum Ahad was shot dead in Kazla, Jatrabari. His father, Alauddin, filed the case on July 6 at Jatrabari police station, naming 468 people, including Sheikh Hasina, as accused.
Khairul Haque had petitioned the High Court seeking bail and dismissal of the case related to the killing of Abdul Kaiyum Ahad.
