The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) recently conducted a raid at the listed address of the Shuchona Foundation, which was established by Saima Wazed, daughter of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Surprisingly, the ACC reported that they could not locate the foundation at the provided address. This was reported by Prothom Alo.
On Wednesday afternoon, January 29, ACC officials initially informed the public that the Shuchona Foundation was registered in Dhaka’s Dhanmondi area and planned to carry out an investigation there.
However, Akhtarul Islam, the ACC’s Deputy Director, later stated,
“Upon visiting the address, no evidence of the Shuchona Foundation was found.”
Saima Wazed is known for her role as the Regional Director for the World Health Organization (WHO) in South-East Asia.
Last Sunday, the ACC revealed that when Saima was nominated for this position, she was holding Canadian citizenship.
Additionally, the commission alleged that she had provided inaccurate details regarding her qualifications and that there were credible claims of corruption against her.
The ACC further stated that under the name of the Shuchona Foundation, Saima had allegedly received money and gifts from several social and business organizations.
Sources within the ACC have also suggested that she used her influence over the National Board of Revenue (NBR) to exempt the foundation’s funds from taxation.
Previously, on November 24, the central bank’s Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU) had ordered the freezing of Shuchona Foundation’s bank accounts amid ongoing investigations.
