ASK urges judicial probe into Khagrachhari violence

The legal rights group Ain o Salish Kendra (ASK) has expressed deep concern over the recent violence in Khagrachhari that left three people dead, several injured, and saw homes and businesses of ordinary residents set on fire.

In a statement issued Monday, ASK demanded a judicial inquiry to identify the causes and perpetrators of the violence, and called for measures to ensure the safety of the teenage rape survivor at the center of the unrest.

ASK said a judicial commission must be formed immediately to investigate the incident, identify those responsible and guarantee justice for the victim.

It also urged authorities to provide proper compensation to the families of the dead and injured, and to rehabilitate those whose properties were damaged.

“It is the duty of the state to protect citizens’ lives, property and dignity. When this duty fails, society as a whole bears the consequences,” the statement read.

The group also pressed for an immediate investigation and appropriate action if excessive force was used during the incident.

It noted that recurring tensions in the Chittagong Hill Tracts continue to cause loss of life and property because past incidents have not been fully investigated or their root causes addressed.

ASK added that establishing peace in the hill tracts is essential not only for the local communities but also for national unity and the country’s image.

“Violence, fear and provocation are never solutions—they only deepen mistrust and instability, obstructing the nation’s progress,” the statement said, stressing that citizens’ rights and security must be equal for all.
