The government is keeping a close watch on the rapidly changing situation in the Middle East, with assurances of support for Bangladeshi citizens affected by flight disruptions, Religious Affairs Minister Kazi Shah Mofazzal Hossain Kaikobad said on Saturday.
The minister visited Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka, where he met passengers stranded due to the suspension of several international flights amid regional tensions.
He spoke with affected travellers, listened to their concerns and reassured them that their safety and welfare remain a top priority.
Kaikobad said coordination is under way with relevant authorities to facilitate passengers’ onward journeys once conditions improve.
He urged those waiting at the airport to remain patient, noting that the situation is being handled with care.
The unrest has led to the cancellation of flights to several Middle Eastern destinations, including Amman, Kuwait, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Doha and Bahrain, leaving many Umrah pilgrims and other travellers unable to depart.
Airport authorities and concerned agencies are providing updates and assistance to manage the situation.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh has expressed serious concern over the safety of its nationals living in the Middle East following the latest hostilities, including developments involving Iran.
An emergency meeting was held in Dhaka in the evening, attended by Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam, the Prime Minister’s Adviser on Foreign Affairs Humaiun Kobir and Foreign Secretary Asad Alam Siam, to assess the evolving situation and review necessary measures.
