The Chairman of the independent investigation commission, retired Major General A.L.M. Fazlur Rahman, has revealed that if needed, people living abroad will be questioned to uncover the full truth behind the tragic BDR massacre of 2009.
He made this statement following the first meeting of the commission, held on Thursday at the 5th BGB Battalion conference room in Dhaka.
Fazlur Rahman said,
"We will not work in secrecy or leave the nation in the dark. A fair and proper investigation will be done. We have been tasked with identifying both local and foreign conspiracies. If necessary, we will question people living abroad. Letters will be sent to those countries, or investigation teams will be sent there."
The horrific BDR massacre took place on February 25 and 26, 2009, at the BDR headquarters in Pilkhana, Dhaka.
Rebellious soldiers launched an attack, leading to the brutal killing of 57 army officers.
On December 19, 2023, a case was filed against 58 individuals, including former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and former army chief Moeen U Ahmed, at the office of the Chief Prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal in connection with the massacre.
After this, on December 24, 2023, the government issued a decree to set up an independent investigation commission to look into the incident.
The commission is expected to submit its report to the government within 90 days from the notification date.
