Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) has proposed to construct flyover or subway from Gulistan to Sadarghat in the capital to lessen transport costs and hassle of the passengers.
Besides, the shipping ministry body also urged to repair different roads in Jatrabari, Keraniganj, Sadarghat and adjoining areas and free the pavements from illegal occupation.
The proposal was given during a meeting of the parliamentary committee on the shipping ministry based on a report prepared by the ministry.
According to the report, severe barriers are created at all entry points of Sadarghat coming from Jagannath University Shyambazar and Babu Bazar Bridge due to illegal occupations by hawkers, floating traders and stalled vehicles leaving the road link shattered and the commuters amid grave suffering. The suffering knows no bound during the Eid travel.
The BIWTA suggested to relocate the wholesale kitchen markets in Sadarghat and Old Dhaka to reduce hassles of the travelers.
An ultra-modern terminal will be built at the left side of the river Sadarghat river port funded by the World Bank. Besides, the construction works to build walkway around Dhaka city, border pillar, amusement parks under the project entitled to ‘Construction of relevant infrastructure including piller, wakway and jetty along Buriganga, Shitalakhya and Balu rivers, the report read.
“We have already installed parking station for passengers. Construction of flyover or underpass from Gulistan to Sadarghat has been proposed. The project will mobilise the river transport and lessen suffering,” BIWTA director Kazi Wakil Nawaz told The Report.live.
