Case filed over cartoonist Kishore tortures in custody

A case has been filed with a Dhaka court on Wednesday accusing unnamed people who allegedly tortured cartoonist Ahmed Kabir Kishore in police custody.

The case was filed by Kishore's lawyer, Jyotirmoy Barua, under the Torture and Custodial Death (Prevention) Act, 2013.

Dhaka Senior Special Judges’ Court judge KM Imrul Kayes received a statement of the plaintiff and said he would give an order later.

According to the case statement, Kishore was subjected to severe physical and mental torture in custody after Rapid Action Battalion members picked him up from his Kakrail house.

Soon after being released on bail, the cartoonist narrated the torture he was subjected to in the detention.

Kishore was arrested in May 2020 along with writer Mushtaq Ahmed, who was declared dead on February 25 in a hospital after losing consciousness in a high-security prison.

Both were arrested under the Digital Security Act for allegedly ‘spreading on social media. Kishore was released from jail on March 4, a day after he was granted six-month bail by the High Court
