Several members of the Bangladesh Coast Guard were injured after a Coast Guard station in the Sundarbans came under attack and was vandalised in Mongla upazila of Bagerhat on Thursday.

The incident occurred at the Harbaria Coast Guard Station in the Joymonir Ghol area, prompting authorities to deploy police and launch an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the attack.

In a statement issued later in the day, the Coast Guard said a group of attackers carried out a sudden assault on the station, damaging property and injuring personnel on duty.

Following the incident, law enforcement agencies moved to secure the area, while a joint investigation was launched to identify those responsible and determine the motive behind the attack.

According to the Coast Guard, initial findings suggest that criminal groups and vested interests may have been behind the incident. The force alleged that the attack was intended to disrupt its operations against forest pirates and other illegal activities in the Sundarbans.

The Coast Guard said it has intensified efforts to uncover those involved and bring them under legal action. It also stressed that its operations in the Sundarbans would continue despite the attack.

Authorities noted that the force regularly conducts patrols, intelligence-based surveillance and special drives in the forest region to combat piracy, robbery and other criminal activities.

The Coast Guard station at Joymonir Ghol was established in an area long considered a stronghold for forest-based criminal networks. Officials claim its presence has significantly disrupted the movement of weapons, supplies and logistical support to such groups.

Meanwhile, another account of the incident suggested that a number of local residents from the area travelled to the station by small boats and were involved in the confrontation. However, officials said details surrounding that claim could not be independently verified.

Mongla Police Station Officer-in-Charge Atikur Rahman said police responded immediately after receiving reports of the attack.

"The situation is now under control, and police have been deployed in the area," he said.

The police official added that the Coast Guard is preparing to file a formal complaint, after which legal proceedings will begin.

Md Rezaul Karim Chowdhury, Divisional Forest Officer of the Sundarbans East Forest Division, said authorities had been monitoring tensions in the area since the morning and that the matter remains under investigation.

Officials from the relevant agencies are now examining the incident to establish the full sequence of events and determine responsibility.
