There is a shortage of birth control products in the country. Field workers of family planning department are unable to provide condoms, IUDs (intra uterine devices) to couples when required. The department is trying to tackle the situation by collecting birth control materials from various NGOs and international organizations.
Experts say this situation has arisen due to the absence of accountability. If this state of government service continues for a long time, there is a risk of adversely affecting the population of the country.
In 1975, eight percent of couples used to have family planning. In 2022, this rate was 64 percent. The government is talking about increasing family planning services, on the other hand there is a shortage of birth control materials at the field level.
The birth control rate has been stagnant in the country for eight years. Doctors fear that if the supply shortage is not resolved quickly, unwanted pregnancies, abortions and maternal deaths may increase.
Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr. Samanta Lal Sen told the media, "I direct it to be resolved as soon as possible. I hope there will be no more shortages in the future. I will make arrangements to fill this shortage as soon as possible."
