With landfalling Cyclone Remal claimed the life of a young man named Shariful Islam, while he bravely escorted his aunt and sister to safety. The body was retrieved nearly an hour later with the initiatives of the local inhabitants.
On Sunday, the 26th of May, at noon, Shariful, a resident of Anantapara area in Kolapara, found himself engulfed in the sea waters. He hailed from the household of his aunt, Matiara Begum, in the coastal area of Kauyar Char.
According to police and local sources, Shariful`s aunt, Matiara Begum, resided in Kauyar Char. Shariful accompanied his elder brother and uncle from Anantapara to rescue his sister and aunt. At the time, the area of Kauyar Char was submerged under 5 to 7 feet of water. As Shariful treaded through the waters to reach his aunt`s house, tragedy struck as he got swept away in the fierce currents.
Officer-in-Charge Anwar Hossain Talukdar of Mahipur Police Station stated, "The police have been dispatched to the scene of the incident. Necessary measures are being taken in this regard."
