Cyclone `Remal` has left at least 10 people dead and more than 22 millions without power across Barisal, Bhola, Patuakhali, Satkhira, and Chittagong. The cyclone brought destructive winds reaching up to 120 kph and caused storm surges that inundated hundreds of villages.
According to the Economic Times, when Cyclone Remal made landfall in the coastal regions of West Bengal and neighboring Bangladesh last night, a wall collapse in Kolkata resulted in one fatality.
On Monday morning, the Meteorological Department reported that early warnings and public awareness helped mitigate the cyclone’s impact.
However, due to weak embankments, many villages were flooded even before the cyclone made landfall, as storm waves up to 5-6 feet high struck the coast. In Patuakhali, one person was swept away by the high waves, and in Satkhira, another person died while heading to a shelter. Two people, including a child, are missing after a trawler capsized in Mongla. Additionally, five more fatalities were reported in Barisal, Bhola, and Chittagong due to the cyclone.
The Meteorological Department further stated that the powerful cyclone Remal has now moved north after crossing the coast and is currently located near the outskirts of Koyra in Khulna. It is expected to weaken into a regular cyclone within the next 2-3 hours, accompanied by increasing rainfall.
