DSCC adjoining areas 'safe haven of Aedes mosquito breeding'

Dengue fever is on the rise across the country. The capital Dhaka itself has the highest number of dengue patients. Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) authorities are conducting campaign to eradicate Aedes mosquito larvae to make the capital free dengue infestation. However, Aedes mosquito larvae are found in and around the DSCC building.

Flurry of questions has arisen among the people about the effectiveness of the dengue prevention campaign conducted by the city corporation authorities.

Aedes mosquito larvae, one of the bearers of dengue, were spotted at various regional office buildings of the Southern City Corporation (DSCC) and several buildings in the surrounding area. Many find the city corporation's indifference to eradicating Aedes mosquito breeding grounds in and around the city building and its various regional buildings disappointing.

Many of them said that the image of the whole city is easily conceivable where the corporation building is unprotected.

The Report learned that water mounted up in the motorcycle garage on the left side to enter the DSCC Regional Office-2 (Khilgaon area). It can be seen that this water has been logged for about five / six days.

Not only on the left side but also on the right side of this building, the branches of different trees have been lying for a long time. These are kept in such a way that it looks like a piece of dirt. If it rains after dumping garbage in these places or if someone throws water, the water may stay and give birth to Aedes mosquito larvae.

The situation in Region-5 (Sayedabad Region) is direr. It can be seen on the spot that water has accumulated in half of the place before entering the building. Many dustbins on the right side of the building contain rainwater. It looks like Aedes mosquito larvae are being produced here.

Not only the dustbin but also the side drainage line is filled up with garbage. The place seems to be a sanctuary of mosquito breeding.

When asked about the situation in Zone-5, none of the administrative officials, including the regional executive officer Mohammad Sakhawat Hossain Sarkar, agreed to talk about it.

However, from the very beginning, officials are trying to keep the building clean and tidy, claimed Sue Men Joe, the regional executive officer of Zone-2.

"I've been very aware of this since the beginning," he told TheReport.live. I wanted to prevent my office area from accumulating Aedes mosquito larvae. That's why we've set up an emergency team one day a week to see if there's any water in our office or adjacent areas, or if there's a possibility of Aedes mosquito larvae somewhere. They take care of it one day every week,” he told TheReport.live.

The situation is similar not only in Region-2 and Region-5 but also in Region-3 (Azimpur Region). Before entering the building, the water is logged on the right side. Going a little further by its side, it can be seen that the garbage has been dumped in front of the drainage line in such a way that the water has accumulated and it has also moved towards the road. The origin of which is Aedes mosquito larvae. Not just the drainage line, but piles of rubbish have been seen in various places after entering the building. The presence of mosquitoes in these places is also noticeable.

Babar Ali Mir, regional executive officer of Zone-3, said that there were some problems due to the abandonment of the building. "The office I sit in is an abandoned building," he told TheReport.live. “So in some cases there is a little problem. However, we are constantly making arrangements to prevent Aedes mosquito larvae from being born.”

Dhaka South City Corporation Chief Health Officer Brig. Gen. Md. Sharif Ahmed said, action would be taken on the basis of the allegations to solve the problem of mosquito larvae. “I have not received any complaint in this regard so far.”

He said, "We have given instructions to keep the regional building and adjacent areas of the city corporation neat and clean.

“Besides, other areas of the city corporation have also been asked to be kept clean. If we find specific allegations, we will alert the regional authorities accordingly and take action to resolve the issue,” added he.
