Obaidul Quader, the Minister of Road Transport and Bridges, has emphasized the need to prevent helpers from taking on the role of drivers. He stated, “Helpers should not become drivers. If helpers become drivers, accidents will inevitably occur.”

Quader made this statement during a press conference on Wednesday (May 30) at the BRTA building in the capital, following a meeting with various stakeholders.

He highlighted the importance of keeping the roads congestion-free during the Eid travels, especially at the entry points of Dhaka. “We have been instructed to increase surveillance and ensure adequate vehicle supply. After Eid, the reduction in monitoring leads to an increase in road accidents. We need to enhance road supervision to prevent recurring accidents,” he said.

The minister also addressed the traffic congestion on the Hanif Flyover. “It takes 30 to 40 minutes to travel from Cumilla to Dhaka, but then one has to sit on the Hanif Flyover for one and a half to two hours due to heavy traffic. We have directed the relevant authorities to solve this problem in the national interest.”

Quader urged strict monitoring to prevent overcharging of bus fares. “Many passengers run out of money due to excessive fares. We request bus owners to stop overcharging, and BRTA should monitor this strictly in the interest of the public.”

Regarding city traffic during the rainy season, he said, “Roadworks should be halted for at least seven days during the rains to prevent congestion. CNG stations should remain open around the clock for seven days before Eid and five days after Eid.”

The event was attended by ABM Amin Ullah Nuri, Secretary of the Road and Highways Division, and Monjur Hossain, Secretary of the Bridges Division, among others.
