Former Justice Manik detained from Sylhet border

Former Appellate Division Justice AHM Shamsuddin Chowdhury Manik has been detained by local residents in the Zakiganj border area of Sylhet and handed over to the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB). He was subsequently taken to the Sylhet BGB Sector Headquarters. Sources indicate that he was attempting to flee to India.

A case was filed against Justice Manik, along with Workers Party President Rashed Khan Menon and Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JaSoD) President Hasanul Haque Inu, in Dhaka‍‍`s Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) court on Thursday. The charges stem from alleged derogatory remarks they made about BNP founder and former President Ziaur Rahman.

After a hearing, Metropolitan Magistrate Saiful Islam directed the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) to investigate the matter and submit a report. According to the complainant‍‍`s petition, Justice Manik made disparaging comments about Ziaur Rahman during a talk show aired by "Channel i" on October 3, 2022, where he claimed that "Ziaur Rahman was not a freedom fighter, but a Razakar."
