The Indian Parliament will on Wednesday observe obituary tributes to Begum Khaleda Zia, former prime minister of Bangladesh and chairperson of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), during a sitting of the Rajya Sabha.

As per the official List of Business of the Upper House for January 28, obituary references will be made to the passing of Begum Khaleda Zia, along with tributes to former Indian parliamentarians.

The homage will be paid approximately half an hour after the conclusion of the President of India’s address to both Houses of Parliament. At that time, members of the Rajya Sabha will formally commemorate leaders who have recently passed away.

Begum Khaleda Zia served as Bangladesh’s prime minister on several occasions and remained a dominant figure in the country’s political landscape for decades. As BNP chairperson, she played a pivotal role in shaping Bangladesh’s politics, particularly during periods of political transition and democratic movements.

The decision by the Indian Parliament to honour her reflects recognition of her political stature in South Asia and her contribution to Bangladesh–India relations during her time in office.

The obituary reference will be formally placed on record by the Rajya Sabha Secretariat as part of parliamentary proceedings.

Bangladesh’s first female prime minister, Begum Khaleda Zia, passed away on December 30, 2025.
