Iqbal Hossain, the prime accused in the Cumilla communal violence case has been put on 7-day remand by the court. He is suspected to be the man who placed the Quran at a makeshift temple in Cumilla on the banks of Nanuwar dighi.
Iqbal's acts lead to widespread attacks on the Hindu community. Many temples were vandalised, and homes burned following Iqbal's descecration of the Quran.
He was produced before Comilla Senior Judicial Magistrate Mithila Jahan Nipa’s court at 11:55 AM on Saturday (October 23). The police sought a 10-day remand, however the court granted 7-day remand.
Law enforcement agencies tightened security in the court premises while Iqbal was produced.
Earlier, Iqbal was arrested from Cox's Bazar on Thursday (October 21). From there he was taken to Comilla Police Lines.
