Bangladesh is witnessing a rise in COVID-19 cases for the past couple of weeks. On Thursday, the country has recorded the highest number of cases in the last 100 days. But the government has not cancelled the decision of reopening schools; the High Court has also dismissed an appeal from the 41st BCS candidates to postpone the exam.
In light of recent developments, The Daily Star has reported that the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) has suggested the government to issue a complete lockdown.
According to the report, the DGHS has proposed the government not to reopen educational institutions and halt any public examinations in the wake of the rising number of COVID-19 patients.
The Report spoke to the Additional Director General (Administration) Professor Dr Nasima Sultana in this regard. She informed that no such suggestion has been made to the higher authority yet.
“As per my knowledge, I am not aware about this decision. The situation is alarming, but we are still observing. And lockdown and any other provisions fall under the decision of the Health Ministry.”
“I personally do not hold any knowledge of this decision that we have suggested full lockdown,” she added.
The situation remains cloudy, as no high official from government made any statement about the upcoming plan regarding the rigorous rise of COVID-19 cases in the country, which includes cases from the new COVID-19 variant.
Speaking at a programme marking the birth centenary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Health Minister Zahid Maleque said, “The new Covid-19 strain was found in 10 European Union returnees.”
Meanwhile, in the last 10 days, the transmission of novel coronavirus had been gradually rising every day with experts fearing spread of the new strains of novel coronavirus, including those first detected in the UK and South Africa.
