Ishraq demands resignation of Asif, Mahfuj

Ishraq called on them to resign and continue their political activities within their respective parties.

BNP leader Ishraq Hossain has demanded the resignation of two advisers from the interim government, claiming it is necessary to restore neutrality.

He named Local Government Adviser Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan and Information Adviser Mahfuj Alam, stating that both should step down immediately.

Speaking during a protest organized by his supporters in Dhaka, Ishraq alleged that these advisers were interfering in administrative matters, preventing him from taking the oath as mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation—despite a court ruling in his favor. He clarified that the ongoing movement is not about seeking power or position, but about ensuring fair national elections and protecting the people’s right to vote.

According to Ishraq, the court annulled the previous mayor’s election and declared him the rightful mayor. Following this, the Election Commission issued a gazette on April 27, officially recognizing his position.

However, the Ministry of Local Government has yet to take action regarding his swearing-in, even after receiving a formal letter from the commission.

He further stated that while he holds no personal animosity toward the two advisers, their political involvement while serving in the interim government raises questions about fairness.

Ishraq called on them to resign and continue their political activities within their respective parties.

He emphasized that the issue now concerns fundamental democratic principles, and unless resolved, the protest will continue.

Ishraq has vowed to persist until he is allowed to fulfill his role as mayor, in accordance with the court‍‍`s decision.
