JnU students declare ‘shutdown’ until demands are met

Professor Dr. Rais Uddin, General Secretary of the Teachers’ Association, has announced a full shutdown of Jagannath University (JNU) until the students‍‍` demands are fulfilled.

On Thursday (May 15), after discussions with the protesting students, he made this announcement at Kakrail, where the ongoing movement is taking place.

“We have come here to claim the rights of Jagannath University. We are here to ensure the demands of JNU are met. Police have carried out indiscriminate attacks on us, which is complete anarchy and injustice. We have not come here to speak against anyone or to conspire. We want our rights and demands fulfilled. Until then, we will not return home. The university will remain shut down; no educational or examination activities will take place until our demands are met,” Dr. Rais Uddin said.

He added, “If any action is taken to remove us from here, it will not be good. No one can harm any of my students in front of me.”

During the protest, students chanted slogans such as “We want housing, not deprivation,” “No budget cuts,” and “We demand justice for the attack.”

Students have been continuously occupying Kakrail for nearly 24 hours. Though many are exhausted, no one has left the protest. Some even slept on the streets overnight and continued their sit-in this morning.
