Low pressure over Bay triggers intermittent rain across Bangladesh

Rain began early Thursday morning in Dhaka and has continued in several parts of the country due to a well-marked low pressure system that has developed into a depression over the Bay of Bengal.

According to the weather authorities, this rainfall is expected to persist throughout the day and may continue into Friday.

Alerts have been issued for all four divisions—Chattogram, Khulna, Barishal, and Sylhet—with warnings of heavy to very heavy rainfall in some areas.

As a precaution, maritime ports across the country have been advised to hoist cautionary signal number three.

Bangladesh has experienced intense heatwaves since the start of May, with record-high temperatures reported earlier this month.

However, scattered rainfall began appearing in the second half of the month, gradually increasing in frequency.

Now, with the development of the depression, the rainfall has intensified, although meteorologists have ruled out the possibility of it turning into a cyclone.

The depression formed early Thursday over the sea. It may bring significant rainfall through Friday, though a noticeable decline is expected by Saturday, particularly in the Rajshahi and Rangpur divisions.

Authorities have warned of the risk of landslides in the hilly regions of Chattogram, Rangamati, Bandarban, and Cox‍‍`s Bazar due to potential rainfall exceeding 88mm, which qualifies as very heavy rainfall.
