More rains to lash Bangladesh as death toll hits 42

More rains are likely to drench Bangladesh in the next 24 hours, with the death toll from flood in different parts of the country including the northeastern region reaching 42 on Wednesday morning.

The deaths were reported since June 17.

In a forecast later in the day, the Met office said light to moderate rain or thundershowers accompanied by temporary gusty wind and intense lightning flashes is likely to occur at many places over Rangpur, Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions and at a few places over Rajshahi, Mymensingh and Dhaka divisions with moderately heavy to heavy falls at places over Rangpur, Khulna, Barishal and Chattogram divisions.

The weather department recorded 96mm rainfall – the highest – in Madaripur in the last 24 hours till 6pm Wednesday.

The mercury reached 34.5 degrees Celsius – the highest – in Sayedpur, while the minimum temperature was 23 degrees in Sitakunda.

Day and night temperatures may remain nearly unchanged, the BMD said.

Sylhet people to continue suffering

The flood situation in six upazilas of Sylhet worsened Wednesday as incessant rainfall and an onrush of water from upstream kept pounding the region for the last few days, leaving its major rivers in spate.

More than 1 lakh people of Zakiganj, Fenchuganj, Beani Bazar, Osmaninagar, Balaganj, and Gopalganj were left stranded due to flooding.

However, the water levels remained unchanged in the rivers Surma, Dholai, Piyain, and Luva and the flood situation on their banks improved slightly.
