Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has canceled the decision to ban battery-operated auto rickshaws in Dhaka, according to Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader. The announcement was made during a cabinet meeting.
Previously, the government had planned to prohibit these auto rickshaws to improve transport discipline and reduce accidents. However, the proposal faced significant controversy and protests.
The primary reason for canceling the ban is the livelihood of millions of people. Around 2 to 3 million families depend on these battery-operated auto rickshaws. Considering their importance in the transport system, the government decided to revoke the ban.
Furthermore, the government is planning to legalize battery-operated auto rickshaws. This initiative aims to improve the quality of existing auto rickshaws and ensure the design and safety of new ones.
