In a heartbreaking turn of events, the body of a 16-year-old boy, Sainur Rashid, also known as Kabyo, was found in a lake in the Purbachal area of Narayanganj.
Sainur was the son of Harunur Rashid, from the Kachukhet Bau Bazar area in Kafrul. He was a tenth-grade student at Adamjee Cantonment School and College in Dhaka.
The discovery took place on the morning of December 18, 2024. Police, with the help of a Fire Service diving team, pulled Sainur`s body from the water.
Alongside him, his motorcycle was also found submerged. His family later confirmed that the motorcycle belonged to him.
This tragic incident follows the discovery of another teenager`s body, 17-year-old Sujana Akhter, found in the same lake just the day before.
During the recovery of her body, a helmet and bag were also found nearby. It has since been revealed that Sujana and Sainur were close friends.
In a press briefing at noon, Narayanganj District Superintendent of Police, Pratyush Kumar Majumder, shared, “Our initial thoughts suggest the two teens may have lost control of the motorcycle due to speeding, resulting in the tragic accident. However, we are leaving no stone unturned.
We`re gathering CCTV footage from surrounding areas, and the autopsies of both Sujana and Sainur will be carried out at the 100-bed General Hospital. We will know the full cause of death after that.”
Assistant Superintendent of Police Mehedi Islam explained that although Sujana and Kabyo attended different schools, their friendship developed as they both attended a coaching center together.
On the afternoon of December 16, Sujana had told her family she was going to visit a friend, and later joined Kabyo for a motorcycle ride in Purbachal. When neither returned home, both families began searching for them.
On December 17, police discovered Sujana`s body in the lake near Bridge 4 in Purbachal’s Sector 2. Then, on December 18, the diving team recovered Kabyo`s body from the same area, along with his motorcycle.
The authorities suspect the two teens were riding the motorcycle at high speed and lost control, falling into the lake. However, the exact cause of death will be confirmed once the autopsy reports are available.
Kabyo’s father, Harunur Rashid, spoke about the incident, saying, “He left home on Monday afternoon to go for a ride. After that, we couldn’t find him anywhere. We searched all around but couldn’t locate him. Then, on Tuesday morning, we heard the news about Sujana’s body being found. That’s when we realized Kabyo had gone to Purbachal with her. The very next morning, we got the call about his body being found at the same spot, along with his motorcycle. It seems like an accident, but we’ll know more once the autopsy is done. We hope the police will look into whether there’s any other reason behind this.”
Meanwhile, Sujana’s family was at the 100-bed General Hospital in Narayanganj from early morning, waiting for the autopsy to be completed so they could take her body. By 3:00 p.m., they were still waiting.
In deep sorrow, Sujana’s mother, Champa Begum, shared, “My daughter loved riding motorcycles. She used to go out with her friends on rides often. On Monday afternoon, she told me she was going for tuition, but she never returned. When I called her around 9:00 p.m., her phone was off.”
