Fuel prices will not increase immediately: Finance adviser

Finance Adviser Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed has stated that fuel prices in Bangladesh will not be increased immediately, pending any significant impact on the oil market caused by the ongoing Iran-Israel conflict.

Speaking to reporters after meetings of the Economic Affairs Advisory Committee and the Government Procurement Advisory Committee at the Secretariat’s new conference room on Tuesday afternoon, Dr. Ahmed said the situation is currently under close observation.

Responding to questions about whether the conflict would affect fuel prices in the country, he said, “At present, we are monitoring the situation.

If the war prolongs, it might put some pressure on us, but for now, there is no impact on trade.”

He added that if prices for gas or LNG rise, the government would consider revising fuel costs. “Today, we approved LNG imports at the old price. Fortunately, we will get it at the previous rate.”

When asked if the government has made any special preparations, Dr. Ahmed said the recent LNG and fertilizer import approvals were at existing prices. However, future imports may have some price effects.

Regarding contingency plans if the conflict extends, the adviser acknowledged that the Ministry of Energy is exploring alternatives.

“Since we depend heavily on LNG, the war could affect not only fuel but also shipping, especially through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime route. I believe the conflict will not last long,” he added.
