Vegetable markets in the capital have become volatile again, with prices of most vegetables rising beyond the reach of ordinary consumers. Green chillies have seen the sharpest increase, while prices of onions, fish, broiler chickens and eggs have also shown an upward trend.
The price situation was observed during visits to different markets in the capital on Friday.
Green chillies are being sold at Tk400 per kilogram. Eggplants are selling for Tk120–180 per kg, tomatoes for Tk160–200 per kg, and bitter gourds for Tk100–140 per kg. Pointed gourds, okra, teasel gourds and ridge gourds are being sold at Tk70–80 per kg depending on quality. Papayas are selling for Tk40 per kg and potatoes for Tk30 per kg.
The price of onions has increased by Tk10 per kg over the past week, reaching Tk60 per kg. Meanwhile, taro stems are selling for Tk80–100 per kg, taro roots for Tk80–100, cucumbers for Tk100, yardlong beans for Tk100, carrots for Tk140 and sweet pumpkins for Tk60 per kg.
In the markets, four lemons are being sold for Tk15–30. Local coriander leaves are selling at Tk300 per kg, while hybrid coriander leaves cost Tk220 per kg. Four green bananas are priced at Tk40–50, each bottle gourd costs Tk60–80, and capsicum is selling for Tk350 per kg. A bundle of red amaranth has increased by Tk10 to Tk25. Water spinach is selling for Tk50 per bundle, two bundles of morning glory for Tk40, Malabar spinach for Tk40 and two bundles of stem amaranth for Tk40.
In fish markets, shrimp is selling at Tk800–900 per kg, pabda fish at Tk350–400, rohu at Tk300–450 depending on size, and tengra at Tk700 per kg. Bhetki is selling for Tk400–550, mrigel for Tk250–300, baim for Tk600–800, local koi for Tk700–800, farmed koi for Tk300, poa for Tk260 and shol fish for Tk700 per kg.
Farmed shing fish is being sold at Tk300–450 per kg depending on size. However, consumers have to pay more than Tk1,000 per kg for rupchanda, large shol fish and river bally fish. Meanwhile, hilsa weighing around 300 grams is selling for Tk1,200–1,300 per kg, 500–700 gram hilsa for Tk2,000–2,200 per kg and 1kg hilsa for Tk3,200 per kg.
In the poultry market, Sonali chickens are selling for Tk300 per kg, red layer chickens for Tk350, broiler chickens for Tk180–190 and local chickens for Tk750 per kg. Beef is being sold at Tk780–800 per kg, while mutton costs Tk1,300 per kg.
In the egg market, a dozen red-layer chicken eggs are selling for Tk150, duck eggs for Tk200 per dozen, local chicken eggs for Tk100 per four pieces and Sonali cock eggs for Tk70 per four pieces.
