This year, in the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) and equivalent exams, students have performed poorly in mathematics compared to other subjects.
The results published on Sunday, May 12, revealed that this time, in math, 8.81 percent of students failed, which amounts to nearly 1,66,602 students.
In 2024, apart from mathematics, the pass rates in other subjects are as follows: 85.4 in Bengali, 77.4 in English, 35.2 in Physics, 90.1 in Chemistry, 0.4 in ICT, 85.2 in Accounting, and 85.2 in Civics.
This time, the Madrasa Board has performed the worst in mathematics. The board has a failure rate of 12.64 percent in math. On the other hand, in the Dhaka Board, the failure rate in mathematics is 12.28 percent. Conversely, the Jessore Board has excelled in mathematics, with a pass rate of 98.55 percent.
In Rajshahi Board, 6.26 percent failed in mathematics, in Comilla Board, 12.04 percent got 0, in Chittagong Board, 7.63 percent failed, in Barisal Board, 7.04 percent got 0, in Sylhet Board, 6.39 percent failed, in Dinajpur Board, 11.90 percent, and in Mymensingh Board, 10.49 percent of students failed in mathematics.
Education experts attribute the poor performance in mathematics in SSC and equivalent exams to the lack of skilled and trained teachers in mathematics and the weakness of students in mathematics from the primary level.
Furthermore, Dhaka District Education Officer Md. Abdul Majid told the media, “We will discuss with the teachers why students performed poorly in the exam. We need to find out the reasons behind the poor results and take appropriate measures accordingly.”
