Pakistan has imposed a state of emergency in Bannu, citing intelligence warnings of possible sabotage, as security tensions rise near the Afghan border.

Local authorities have restricted the movement of certain vehicles across the district.

As a precaution, District Education Officer Abdul Malik ordered all government schools to remain closed for one day to ensure public safety, according to Al Jazeera.

Police have been placed on maximum alert.

District Police Officer Yasir Afridi said security forces foiled six attempted attacks, including incidents near the Kashoo Bridge check post and the Kotka Muhammad Khan Domel area.

Residents have been urged to stay calm, avoid rumours and cooperate with law enforcement.

The emergency measures come amid heightened tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Islamabad has ruled out talks with the Afghan Taliban, with Prime Minister’s spokesperson Mosharraf Zaidi saying Pakistan would take firm action to stop cross-border militancy.

Afghanistan, meanwhile, said it is pursuing active diplomacy alongside what it called responsible military steps.

Afghan officials confirmed consultations with regional partners to explain their position.

Pakistan’s Information Minister Attaullah Tarar claimed significant militant casualties and the destruction of multiple checkpoints, though the figures could not be independently verified.

With both diplomatic and military activity intensifying, the situation along the border remains tense, and authorities say security operations in Bannu will continue as needed.
