At least 14 people have died after a powerful earthquake struck northern Ecuador and Peru, authorities said.
According to the United States Geological Survey agency USGS, the epicenter of the 6.8 magnitude earthquake was 10 kilometers away from the city of Balao in Guayas province; the depth was 66.4 kilometers.
“We are in the area checking the damage caused by the earthquake in the morning. I want to assure you, I am with you, in solidarity with the victims," said Ecuador's President Guillermo Lasso in a tweet.
14 people died and more than 380 were injured in the earthquake, informed the Communications Agency Office of the President.
At least 44 houses were destroyed, while another 90 were partially damaged. As many as 50 educational institute buildings and more than 30 health centers were also damaged.
The Geophysical Institute in Ecuador reported two minor aftershocks following the earthquake.
