A 10-month-old child has died at Mymensingh Medical College Hospital after developing complications linked to measles-like symptoms, raising the death toll at the facility to 16 this year.

Hospital officials said the child, admitted from Trishal upazila on April 18, died on Wednesday night due to pneumonia and respiratory failure.

Over the past 24 hours, 27 new patients with suspected measles symptoms were admitted, while 47 children were discharged after recovery. At present, 65 children remain under treatment.

Associate Professor Mohammad Golam Mawla said the hospital has been treating a steady influx of patients since mid-March, with hundreds of children admitted during this period.

Since March 17, a total of 748 children have been hospitalised with similar symptoms, most of whom have recovered.

The surge in cases has put pressure on facilities, with a shortage of beds forcing some patients to receive treatment on floors and in verandas.

Assistant Director Mohammad Mainuddin Khan said three medical teams are working to manage the situation, though limitations in manpower and equipment have hindered the launch of an intensive care unit for children.

He added that Bubble CPAP support is currently being used to treat critically ill patients.
