At least 40 people have been killed after a passenger bus fell into a deep ravine in Pakistan’s Balochistan province. Another eight people were injured in the incident.

The accident took place on Friday in the Danasar area along the Sherani-Zhob highway, on the border between Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces.

According to Pakistan’s Medical Emergency Response Centre (MERC), a bus operated by New Mekhtar Transport, travelling from Quetta to Peshawar, lost control and plunged into a deep ravine. Rescue officials said 40 bodies have so far been recovered from the site, while the injured are being treated at the Zhob Trauma Centre.

Following the accident, a large-scale rescue operation was launched, involving six ambulances, 12 emergency medical technicians, and 10 support vehicles. Teams from the Sherani district administration, rescue services, police, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa responders all participated in the operation.

Sherani Deputy Commissioner Hazrat Wali Kakar said the injured were quickly transferred to nearby hospitals, while efforts to recover bodies continued.

Initial reports suggest the bus had started its journey from Quetta with 36 passengers, but additional passengers boarded en route after another bus broke down, increasing the total number on board.

Emergency measures have been declared at hospitals in Sherani and Dera Ismail Khan to treat the injured. Authorities said rescue operations have been challenging due to the remote mountainous terrain, but multiple agencies are working jointly at the scene.

An investigation into the cause of the accident has been launched by the relevant Pakistani authorities.
