In a historic move, the bald eagle has officially been declared the national bird of the United States. After 250 years of being a symbol of the country, the majestic bird received its rightful recognition with a new law signed by President Joe Biden on Tuesday.
This moment marks the end of a long journey for the bald eagle, which has always been closely tied to the nation`s identity.
For over two centuries, the bald eagle has appeared on the official seal of the United States.
Since 1782, it has represented strength and freedom, but it wasn`t until this week that it was formally named the national bird.
Last week, a bill was passed in Congress to give the bald eagle this special status, and it was sent to President Biden for his approval.
After signing it into law, the bald eagle now holds an official title it has long deserved.
Jack Davis, co-chair of the National Bird Initiative for the National Eagle Center, shared his excitement: “For nearly 250 years, we’ve referred to the bald eagle as our national bird, even though it wasn’t formally recognized as such.
Now, it’s received official recognition, and there’s no bird more deserving of this title.”
Under the National Emblem Act of 1940, the bald eagle has been a protected species in the U.S., making it illegal to hunt or sell them.
Despite this protection, the bald eagle once faced the threat of extinction. Thankfully, since 2009, its numbers have been steadily increasing.
This landmark decision is not just a win for the bald eagle but also a celebration of a bird that has stood as a symbol of America`s strength, resilience, and freedom for centuries.
