Rumors are swirling that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has fled Damascus as rebels close in on the capital.

Allegedly, Assad boarded an Ilyushin-75 aircraft from Damascus Airport, but now both the plane and Assad have seemingly vanished, fueling speculation that the Syrian leader might be dead.

Reports from India Today suggest that "Syrian Air Flight 9218" was the last known flight to leave Damascus, according to tracking data from FlightRadar24.

Midway through its journey, contact with the plane was lost, raising concerns and rumors about its fate.

Some sources speculate that the aircraft, which may have been carrying Assad, could have crashed or been shot down.

The mystery deepened when the plane was last seen over the rebel-controlled area of Homs. It was reported that the aircraft changed course mid-flight, descending from 3,500 meters to 1,000 meters before disappearing entirely.

Reuters hasn‍‍`t confirmed if Assad was onboard, but there are whispers that his wife, Asma, and their two children could have also been on the flight.

The plane’s initial route seemed to lead toward Syria‍‍`s coastal region, a known Assad stronghold, but then abruptly changed course before disappearing from radar.

Two Syrian sources hinted Reuters that Assad might have died in a plane crash, explaining that the sudden change of direction and loss of communication were suspicious.

One source told Reuters, "The plane went off radar. It‍‍`s believed the transponder was turned off, which is why there‍‍`s no signal."

There had been speculation that Assad was heading to either Iran or Russia for refuge, but no concrete details have emerged.

The mystery continues, leaving many wondering whether the Syrian leader is alive or dead.
