The White House has confirmed that President Joe Biden is keeping a close eye on the situation in Bangladesh, particularly on the safety of religious and ethnic minorities.
John Kirby, the National Security Communications Advisor, shared this information during a news briefing on Thursday.
He mentioned that the U.S. government is closely monitoring what’s happening in Bangladesh, and that President Biden is personally following the situation.
“Since the former prime minister was removed, the security situation in Bangladesh has become more complicated,” Kirby said.
“We are working closely with the interim government to improve their security and law enforcement capabilities to handle the challenges they face.”
The briefing also addressed the recent protests in the U.S., where groups of Indian Americans have been rallying in cities like New York, Chicago, and Detroit.
They’ve been protesting the killings of Hindus and attacks on Hindu temples in Bangladesh after the fall of the government led by Sheikh Hasina.
One of the questions during the briefing asked if President Biden knew about these protests and whether he had talked to Bangladesh`s interim leader, Dr. Muhammad Yunus, about the issue during their recent meeting at the United Nations.
Kirby responded, saying that the U.S. has made it clear to Bangladeshi leaders that the protection of religious and ethnic minorities is crucial.
"We’ve told them that the security of all Bangladeshis, no matter their religion or ethnicity, is a top priority," Kirby explained.
In several U.S. cities, protests have continued as Indian Americans demand action to stop the violence against Hindus in Bangladesh, calling on President Biden to intervene and help protect the country`s minorities.
