After a wave of controversy, UK’s Finance and City Affairs Minister Tulip Siddiq has stepped down, and Emma Reynolds has been appointed as her replacement.
The 47-year-old Labour MP from the Wycombe constituency was appointed by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer as the new Minister for Economy following her win in last year’s national elections.
Reynolds, who previously served as the Pensions Minister at the Department for Work and Pensions and Junior Treasury Minister, is now stepping into the role amidst a reshuffle announced by 10 Downing Street on Tuesday, January 14, right after Siddiq`s resignation.
Before representing Wycombe, Reynolds had served as a legislator in several central England seats from 2010 to 2019.
Tulip Siddiq’s resignation came after accusations of corruption linked to the former Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina.
Siddiq, under pressure from the allegations, submitted her resignation letter to Prime Minister Starmer on Tuesday, and it was quickly accepted by his office.
The former minister had recently come under fire for financial irregularities, including accepting gifts from an associate of Sheikh Hasina in London and taking two tickets to the 2019 Cricket World Cup from a former Bangladeshi MP. Siddiq, acknowledging the claims, had called for an investigation by the UK Ministerial Watchdog.
Following the inquiry, advisor Laurie Magnus launched a full investigation.
The opposition Conservative Party has also called for her dismissal, accusing Siddiq of losing the moral authority to serve as a minister, given her involvement in these corruption allegations.
They pointed out that Siddiq had been entrusted with the responsibility of fighting corruption but now stood implicated herself.
