India`s Foreign Minister, S. Jaishankar, recently shared concerns about the treatment of minorities in Bangladesh, calling it a significant issue for India.
He stated that India hopes the Bangladeshi government will take steps to ensure the safety of its minorities, which is also in Bangladesh’s own interest.
Jaishankar made these comments on December 13 during a session in the Indian Lok Sabha, the country`s lower house of Parliament.
He explained that India expects the new government in Bangladesh to focus on building a stable, mutually beneficial relationship between the two countries.
Jaishankar also mentioned that India has raised this issue directly with Bangladesh, and that India’s Foreign Secretary had recently visited Dhaka, where discussions on the matter took place.
Jaishankar emphasized that Bangladesh’s actions to protect its minorities are important, not only for the people affected but also for the country`s own benefit.
He also pointed out that there have been worrying incidents of violence against minorities in Bangladesh, which have raised concerns.
On a positive note, Jaishankar also talked about India`s successful development projects in Bangladesh.
He mentioned that India has a strong history of contributing to Bangladesh’s development and, under India`s "Neighbourhood First" policy, it continues to support neighboring countries with various development initiatives, with Bangladesh being a key partner in this effort.
