At least 10 insurgents were killed in an ongoing operation in Manipur, a conflict-prone northeastern state bordering Myanmar, Reuters reports citing the Indian Army.
This operation follows a Reuters report from November, which revealed that Indian militant groups previously taking refuge in Myanmar—where they had joined the civil war—had started returning across the border into Manipur.
"Ten cadres have been neutralised, and a significant cache of arms and ammunition recovered," the army stated in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday, referencing the gunfight.
Instability along the 1,650-km (1,025-mile) India-Myanmar border has escalated since Myanmar’s military coup in February 2021, which overthrew an elected civilian government.
On the Indian side, Manipur has faced ongoing ethnic violence since May 2023, resulting in nearly 260 deaths and over 60,000 people displaced. The state of 3.2 million remains divided between the Meitei-dominated valley and the Kuki-inhabited hills.
