North Korea launched several projectiles, including a short-range ballistic missile, into the Yellow Sea on Tuesday, according to South Korea’s military.
The launches were detected from the North Korean city of Chongju at around 1:00pm local time, South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said.
Officials said the missiles travelled about 80 kilometres before landing in the Yellow Sea, which lies between the Korean Peninsula and China.
South Korea’s military said it was analysing the missile specifications and monitoring the possibility of more launches.
The military also said South Korea, the United States and Japan were closely sharing intelligence and maintaining full readiness.
The latest launch was North Korea’s first missile test in more than a month and its eighth this year.
Analysts say Pyongyang has increased missile testing in recent weeks while continuing to strengthen its nuclear and military capabilities.
Relations between North and South Korea remain tense, with Pyongyang repeatedly rejecting efforts to improve ties.
Meanwhile, reports in South Korea suggested Chinese President Xi Jinping may visit North Korea this week, although neither Beijing nor Pyongyang has officially confirmed the trip.
