US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Tuesday congratulated Peru‍‍`s president-elect Keiko Fujimori on her election victory, pledging closer cooperation between the two countries under her incoming administration.

In a statement, Rubio described Fujimori‍‍`s success in the presidential election as an important victory and said the United States looks forward to expanding collaboration on security, trade and investment.

He said the Trump administration aims to strengthen bilateral ties with Peru through deeper cooperation on regional security and economic partnerships.

Fujimori, 51, secured the presidency after narrowly defeating left-wing rival Roberto Sanchez in the June 7 runoff election by fewer than 50,000 votes from more than 18 million ballots cast.

She is set to take office at a time when Peru is grappling with growing organised crime, security concerns and prolonged political instability.

The South American country has seen eight presidents take office over the past decade, reflecting years of political turmoil and frequent changes in leadership.
