U.S. President Donald Trump has ended birthright citizenship just hours after taking the oath of office.

On Monday, following his swearing-in as the 47th President of the United States, Trump signed an executive order that revokes the automatic citizenship for certain children born in the U.S.

According to a report from The Washington Post, the new rule states that children born to parents who are in the U.S. illegally, or on temporary visas like for education or tourism, will no longer get U.S. citizenship by birth.

However, if one of the parents is an American citizen, the child will still be granted U.S. citizenship immediately upon birth.

Trump acknowledged while signing the order that, since birthright citizenship is protected by the U.S. Constitution, his decision could face legal challenges.

He stated, "birthright citizenship is completely ridiculous," and expressed confidence that there are solid legal reasons to change the rule.

Trump was sworn in earlier as the 47th President by Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts, marking his return to the White House after a one-term break.

The inauguration ceremony, held at the Capitol Hill Rotunda, saw Vice President J.D. Vance take his oath first, followed by Trump‍‍`s swearing-in.

The event was attended by former U.S. Presidents and First Ladies, who gathered to witness the historic moment.

With this executive order, Trump is taking a strong stand on one of his key immigration promises, setting the stage for potential legal battles ahead.
