President Donald Trump has pardoned 1,500 people connected to the January 6, 2021, Capitol Hill riot.

Trump had previously promised to take this step, and now, he’s delivered on that commitment. His supporters stormed the Capitol in an attempt to reverse the results of the 2020 U.S. election, which saw Joe Biden win.

This news was reported by Reuters.

After signing the pardon, Trump stated, "They will walk free tonight without hesitation. That is what we expect."

Additionally, he mentioned that the sentences of six other individuals involved in the riot would be reduced.

This move comes as no surprise since Trump had made a clear promise to his supporters during his election campaign.

Even though Biden won the 2020 election, Trump consistently alleged that the results were fraudulent and tried to overturn them.

The Capitol Hill riot erupted when some of his most ardent supporters took matters into their own hands, leading to arrests and prison sentences for many.

A spokesperson from the prison department has confirmed that they are awaiting Trump’s official order. Once received, it could lead to the release of many prisoners as early as Monday.

The Capitol riot, which shocked the nation in 2021, followed a heated speech by Trump.

Thousands of his supporters broke through police barricades, clashing with law enforcement officers.

At the time, lawmakers were gathered to certify the election results. Trump’s Vice President, Mike Pence, was forced to flee for his safety due to the violent outbreak.

In his speech after being sworn in on Monday, January 20, Trump defended his decision, stating that 1,600 individuals had been charged in relation to the Capitol Hill incident due to "legal loopholes."

He also described them as "prisoners," suggesting they were unfairly targeted.

This move is expected to spark further debate, with many keeping a close eye on the next steps.
