Former Awami League lawmaker from Shariatpur-1 constituency and suspended party central organizing secretary BM Mozammel Haque has been sent to jail in a murder case filed over the killing of Rubel during the anti-discrimination student movement in Dhaka’s Adabor area.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Jewel Rana passed the order on Monday.
Earlier in the day, Detective Branch (DB) police produced Mozammel before the court and sought to keep him in jail. The investigation officer, Inspector Jahangir Alam, filed the remand petition, citing that further interrogation might be required later.
Mozammel’s lawyer, Liton Mia, submitted a bail petition. However, as the main case documents were not yet received from the lower court, the magistrate ordered him to be sent to jail and said the bail hearing would be held after receiving the case file.
The former MP was detained from Dhaka’s Niketan area on Sunday. Later, he was shown arrested in the murder case and produced before the court.
According to the case statement, on August 5 last year, Rubel and several hundred others brought out a protest march on Ring Road in Adabor as part of the anti-discrimination student movement. Police and activists of the Awami League, Chhatra League, Jubo League, Swechchhasebak League, Sramik League, Tanti League, Krishak League, and Matsyajibi League allegedly opened fire on the procession.
Rubel was critically injured and later died on August 7 while undergoing treatment.
His father, Rafiqul Islam, filed a murder case with Adabor Police Station on August 22 last year.
Police have reported that evidence links Mozammel Haque to Rubel’s killing. They added that he may need to be taken on remand for further questioning and thus should remain in custody for the time being.
