Writ filed challenging candidacy of SM Forhad in DUCSU election

A writ petition has been filed challenging the candidacy of SM Forhad, the General Secretary (GS) candidate from the student alliance panel reportedly backed by Islami Chhatra Shibir, in the upcoming Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) election.

The petition was lodged by BM Fahmida Alam, a candidate for the Liberation War and Democratic Movement Affairs Secretary post from the left alliance panel.

The High Court bench, headed by Justice Habibul Gani, is expected to hear the petition on Sunday (August 31). Barrister Jyotirmoy Barua will represent the writ petitioner, while Advocate Mohammad Shishir Monir will argue on behalf of SM Forhad.

According to the final list of candidates published on August 26, a total of 471 candidates will contest in this year’s DUCSU election. Among those, 28 candidates withdrew voluntarily, while 10 candidates were disqualified during scrutiny and did not appeal against the cancellation of their nominations.

According to the final list, 45 candidates will contest for the Vice President (VP) post, 19 for the General Secretary (GS) post, and 25 for the Assistant General Secretary (AGS) post. In addition, 17 candidates for the Liberation War and Democratic Movement Affairs Secretary, 11 for the Common Room, Reading Room and Cafeteria Secretary, 14 for the International Affairs Secretary, 19 for the Literary and Cultural Secretary, and 12 for the Science and Technology Secretary.

Moreover, 9 candidates will contest for the Research and Publication Secretary, 13 for the Sports Secretary, 12 for the Student Transport Secretary, 17 for the Social Service Secretary, 15 for the Health and Environment Secretary, 11 for the Human Rights and Legal Affairs Secretary, and 15 for the Career Development Secretary.

The highest competition is for the Member posts. This time a total of 217 candidates will contest for Member positions. Altogether, 471 candidates will compete for 28 posts.
