A major gold heist has been reported at a jewelry store in the capital’s Malibagh area, where nearly 500 bhori of gold ornaments were allegedly stolen late Wednesday night.
According to the shop owner, the stolen items include around 400 bhori of the store’s own gold and another 100 bhori of pawned ornaments. Given the current market rate — over Tk 200,000 per bhori — the total loss is estimated to be worth more than Tk 10 crore.
The incident took place at Shampa Jewellers, located on the second floor of Fortune Shopping Mall in Malibagh. Police visited the scene early Thursday morning after receiving the report but have not yet arrested anyone in connection with the theft.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Ramna Police Station, Golam Faruk, said that CCTV footage from the mall shows the grill of a third-floor rear window broken around 3:10 a.m. Wednesday night. Police suspect that the burglars entered the mall through that window, then broke the shutter of Shampa Jewellers and stole the gold ornaments from inside the showcases.
“All CCTV footage from the shopping mall is being examined to identify the culprits,” OC Faruk said.
Mohammad Masud Alam, Deputy Commissioner of Ramna Division, confirmed that security guards were on duty in front of the mall that night. “After the shops closed and the owners and employees left, the burglars entered through the back window and carried out the theft,” he added.
Police are working to identify the thieves and recover the stolen gold. However, authorities said there is still some confusion regarding the exact quantity of the stolen ornaments.
Following the incident, panic has spread among shop owners and traders throughout the shopping complex.
