Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) captured a wanted war crimes suspect on Sunday who had been hiding out in the Ashulia neighborhood of the city for eight years.
Son of the late Hazi Ahmed Ali Shikdar of Kachua Upazila in the Bagherhat district, Md. Azhar Ali Shikdar, 68, is the arrestee.
Azhar Ali Shikder and his associates were directly involved in crimes against humanity like murder, genocide, rape, illegal detention, torture, kidnapping, looting, and arson in the Kachua and Morelganj areas of Bagerhat during the Liberation War in 1971, the elite force claimed in a media release on Monday.
The International Crimes Tribunal issued an arrest order for the war criminal on July 16, 2016.
On Sunday, a squad from RAB-2 captured him after receiving a tip and conducting a drive in the Ashulia police station neighborhood of Dhaka. The arrested person confessed to his involvement in the crimes while being questioned.
