The Supreme Court today denied three leave to appeal petitions filed by Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Muhammad Yunus disputing a High Court ruling that justified the decision to charge tax on money he gave to his three charitable trusts.
After hearing the petitions, a four-member bench of the Supreme Court`s Appellate Division, led by Chief Justice Hasan Foez Siddique, issued the order.
Three other members of the bench are Justice M Enayetur Rahim, Justice Md Ashfaqul Islam and Justice Jahangir Hossain Selim.
On May 31, the HC issued its judgement, saying that it was "legal" to tax the money Yunus gave to his three charitable trusts.
According to Attorney General AM Amin Uddin, the HC decision implies that Yunus would have to pay around Tk 12 crore in taxes on the money he gave to his trusts.
He said that in various years, a tax of almost Tk 15 crore was levied on donations, and that Prof. Yunus had paid the appropriate authority more than Tk 3 crore before challenging the decisions.
