Bangladesh`s Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) has warned that nine districts could face flooding within the next 24 to 48 hours. It also cautioned that low-lying areas in several parts of the country may be inundated over the next 72 hours.
The warning was issued in a flood bulletin released on Tuesday.
According to the bulletin, water levels in the Teesta, Dharla, Dudhkumar, Surma-Kushiyara, Sarigowain and Jadukata rivers may rise above the danger level within the next 24 to 48 hours. As a result, flood risks have increased in the districts of Lalmonirhat, Nilphamari, Rangpur, Gaibandha, Kurigram, Sylhet, Sunamganj, Netrokona and Naogaon.
The FFWC also warned of potential flooding in the Someshwari river basin in Netrokona and the Atrai river basin in Naogaon.
Over the next 72 hours, low-lying areas in Kurigram, Gaibandha, Jamalpur, Bogura, Sirajganj, Tangail, Naogaon, Natore, Bandarban, Cox`s Bazar and Chattogram could be inundated, the agency said.
Among the river monitoring stations under the FFWC`s observation, water levels at four stations on three rivers are currently above the danger mark. These include the Fenchuganj (Sylhet) and Markuli (Sunamganj) stations on the Kushiyara River, the Chhatak station on the Surma River in Sunamganj, and the Kolmakanda station on the Someshwari River in Netrokona.
Meanwhile, weather agencies have forecast heavy rainfall across the Chattogram, Khulna and Barishal divisions over the next 48 to 72 hours, raising concerns that the flood situation could deteriorate further.
