Jhumon Das who in 2021 secured bail in a case filed over his Facebook post criticising Hefajat leader Mamunul Haque—has been arrested again over another controversial post on social media.
Being the plaintiff, police filed a new case against him under the Digital Security Act (DSA).
Jhumon was detained from his Noagaon home in Shalla of Sunamganj on Tuesday. Later on that night, police filed the DSA charge and showed him arrested in the case.
Confirming the matter to the media Officer in Charge (OC) of Shalla police station Aminul Islam said, Jhumon Das shared a post from his personal Facebook ID regarding the mosque and temple few days earlier. This resulted in anger among the locals. Legal steps have been taken in view of the incident.
Sub-Inspector Sumnur Rahman of the police station filed the case as a plaintiff.
On 17 March last year, miscreants attacked and vandalized homes and temples of Hindu community over Jhumon’s controversial post on Facebook.
Jhumon was detained earlier on 16 march and sent to jail following a case against him under DSA.
Jhumon’s wife Sweety Rani Das said, “Police took a position at a primary school adjacent to their home four days earlier. A few members of the law enforcement agency went home yesterday (Tuesday). They told him (Jhumon) that, a senior official will meet him at Noagaon Bazar.”
However, Jhumon and his wife Sweety were not taken to the Bazar. Instead, they were taken to the police station.
Sweety was with Jhumon in the station all day. Around 9pm she returned home while Jhumon was taken into police custody. She called the police Wednesday morning and police said, Jhumon has been arrested.
Regarding the FB post Sweety said, she asked Jhumon about the post. Jhumon told her that, she wrote nothing that can agitate someone. However, he shared one post or two recently over the debate on women’s attire.
